KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State senior track and field athlete Bilal Abdullah has been named the recipient of the Owls of Excellence Award for the month of January, it was announced on Friday (Feb.5).

The Owls of Excellence Award was instituted in August of 2012 and established to recognize Kennesaw State student-athletes who excel in their chosen sport, in the classroom, and provide service to the community. A different student-athlete is honored and featured monthly on the Department of Athletics' website, KSUOwls.com.

In the midst of his fourth season for the Owls, Abdullah posted a 2.87 grade-point average during the fall semester while majoring in computer science and will graduate in December of this year

In addition to assuming the role as the Vice President of the Muslim Student Association, Abdullah is active with community service projects, tutoring elementary school children through Hands on Atlanta, feeding the homeless at various homeless shelters through Atlanta Feed the Homeless, volunteering at the MADD Dash a run for Mother's Against Drunk Driving, and the Brownwood Bike Rally where he emphasized the importance of physical activity in young children.

On the track, Abdullah has put together one of the most impressive careers in Kennesaw State history. He and his teammates on the men's side won both the Indoor and Outdoor Atlantic Sun team championships in each of his first three years. Abdullah is the current  school record holder in the heptathlon, long jump, 60m hurdles, Shuttle Hurdle Relay, 4x200m relay, and 4x400m relay. He is the first athlete in Atlantic Sun history to be named both the Track and Field Athlete of the week in the same week. He has accomplished that three times this season. This season, Abdullah is putting together another strong indoor season leading the A-Sun in many events. His jump of 7.98m (26'2.25) in the long jump at UAB Blazer Invitational, in January, is currently second farthest in the NCAA this season, third farthest in the United States, and fourth in the world in the long jump. He won the heptathlon at the Gladstein Invitational scoring 5688 points which is good for fourth best in the NCAA, fourth most points in the United States, and 17th most in the world this season.
Abullah and the Owls will look to claim their fourth consecutive indoor team championship at the A-Sun Indoor Championships on Feb.26 and Feb.27 in Winston Salem, South Carolina
