Kennesaw State junior women’s Track and Field athlete #Shannon Christian# (Conyers, GA. / Salem HS.) has been named the recipient of the Owls of Excellence Award for the month of January, the Department of Athletics announced on Tuesday.
The Owls of Excellence Award was instituted in August of 2012 and established to recognize Kennesaw State student-athletes who excel in their chosen sport, in the classroom, and provide service to the community. A different student-athlete is honored and featured monthly on the Department of Athletics’ website, KSUOwls.com.
Christian is coming off a strong 2013 season as she finished second in the heptathlon at the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Indoor Championships and placed fourth in the same event at the 2012 A-Sun Conference Outdoor Championships.
During her time at Kennesaw State, Christian has provided leadership as a captain of the track team while also being actively involved in various community activities and serving as Co-Vice President of KSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Christian also serves on the track team’s leadership council which plans and implements rules for the team. Additionally, Christian’s activities include working with Golden Soldiers, reading to local elementary schools in the junior Owls Challenge, and helping with Special Olympics.
Christian, a communications major, has excelled in the classroom , earning a 3.6 grade- point average this past fall.
