KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State men’s basketball junior Yonel Brown has been named the recipient of the Owls of Excellence Award for the month of January, it was announced on Wednesday (Jan. 26).
The Owls of Excellence Award was instituted in August of 2012 and established to recognize Kennesaw State student-athletes who excel in their chosen sport, in the classroom, and provide service to the community. A different student-athlete is honored and featured monthly on the Department of Athletics' website, KSUOwls.com.
Brown is producing a career-best year on the court as he tops the Owls in points per game (15.8) and assists (3.1), ranking fourth and 10th, respectively in the Atlantic Sun Conference. He also tops the conference in free throw percentage (88.7 percent) and minutes played per game (37.0).
Brown is equally impressive off the court, serving as a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative for the men’s basketball program and volunteering extensively in the community. In the classroom, Brown has accumulated a 2.91 grade-point average while majoring in computer science.
Among his many community activities, Brown has cooked and fed children at the Ronald McDonald House at the Atlanta location, mentored and helped out with skill development for youth in the Gwinnett Basketball League, joined the men’s basketball team at the Murphy Harpst Children Center in Cedartown, Ga., taken part in a food drive in Marietta and hosted a terminally ill youth as part of TEAM IPACT, an organization that works to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team.
