KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State senior volleyball player #Emily Bean# (Indianapolis, Ind. / Pike HS) has been named the recipient of the Owls of Excellence Award for the month of August, the Department of Athletics announced on Wednesday.
The Owls of Excellence Award was instituted in August of 2012 and established to recognize Kennesaw State student-athletes who excel in their chosen sport, in the classroom, and provide service to the community. A different student-athlete will be honored and featured monthly on the Department of Athletics’ website, KSUOwls.com.
During her time at Kennesaw State, Bean has provided leadership on and off the court as she is involved in numerous activities while majoring in international affairs and serving as president of the KSU Political Science Club.
In addition to assuming a starting position at outside hitter on the volleyball team, Bean is an active member of the Kennesaw State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving as co-secretary of the organization, a first-year student-athlete mentor and is a student-athlete liaison to for KSU Black and Gold, a registered student organization whose members pride themselves on being the leaders of the student body at all Owl Athletics events.
Bean is extremely active in community engagement as she participates in the Jr. Owls Get Moving Challenge at Chalker Elementary School in Kennesaw and the Jr. Owls Reading Program. Additionally, Bean volunteers with the Golden Soldiers, a faith based, non-profit focused on spreading the Golden Rule by providing year-round events, activities, and services for families and individuals with developmental disabilities.
Bean is certified with the BACCHUS Network, an organization of more than 8,000 student leaders and advisors who work with more than four million peers on more than 300 campuses nationwide. She is specifically involved with Kennesaw State’s Center for Young Adult Addiction and Recovery.
Bean was a leader on the Owls volleyball team during the 2012 season as she twice was named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week. Kennesaw State opens its 2013 campaign on Aug. 30 when it takes on Eastern Kentucky in the La Quinta Inn and Suites Highlander Invitational in Radford, Va.
