KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State saw a career milestone performance from
Shannon Harrington and a strong game from
Hannah Davis that nearly helped the Owls pull off a big home win, but after KSU pulled off a 5-1 run to tie the game in the fourth quarter, Furman closed the contest with four unanswered goals to escape with a 15-11 victory on Saturday afternoon from Fifth Third Stadium.
KEY PLAYERS: Harrington became the sixth Owl to score 100 career goals with her second tally of the game in the fourth quarter, and finished the day with four total goals. That leaves her at 102 currently in her three years as an Owl, fifth-best all-time on the record books. Davis meanwhile scored a hat trick.
Alyssa Angelo meanwhile had a team-high four draw controls to go along with one goal and one assist.
THE RUNDOWN: Goals from Harrington,
Sydney Bumstead and Davis in the opening eight minutes gave the Owls an early 3-1 advantage. Furman scored five of the next seven goals to open up a 6-4 advantage, and the Paladins never trailed again. KSU kept it a tight contest the entire afternoon though, as a goal from Angelo cut the deficit to 7-6 entire halftime. Furman then scored the first three goals of the third quarter to go up 10-6. That was countered by a run of three straight scores from the Owls, with one from freshman
Lexi Tinker and back-to-back goals from Davis to keep it a one-score game going into the fourth at 10-9. Furman scored the first goal of the fourth to go back up 11-9, before goals from Harrington and
Lavona Watkins tied the game at 11-11 with 12:04 on the clock. That was the final score of the day for KSU though, and Furman scored the eventual game-winner with 10:59 to play before following that with three more scores.
POSTGAME QUOTES – Head Coach Laura Maness
"I thought we came out with fire, getting on the board first and jumping out to lead was awesome for us. And so I was really excited about how we started. I think during the game, some stuff was a little bit mismanaged. Getting through the yellow cards really put us in a tough situation, but I thought we worked through things the best we could defensively. We had some size disadvantage, so we had to make some adjustments in trying to get open on feeds that were just bigger than us. I think we made those adjustments, and overall, the effort was there today. Also want to note it was a great day for
Shannon Harrington, who is leaving her mark on this program."
