SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Kennesaw State women's lacrosse was unable to recover from a slow start, as the Owls dropped their last non-conference game of the season 22-14 on the road at Wofford on Saturday afternoon. KSU dropped to 5-5 with the setback, while Wofford moved to 3-5 with the win.
KEY PLAYERS: Senior Caroline Farley set a new career-high with seven goals, scoring the first three goals for the Owls. Shannon Harrington came up right behind with a hat trick, two from the eight-meter mark. Four more Owls had one goal each. Lauren Dobbs led the Owls defensively with five groundballs and three caused turnovers.
THE RUNDOWN: The Owls kept the game tight in the first 12 minutes, as Farley scored two straight goals to keep KSU within a goal. The teams continued to alternate scores until KSU finished the first quarter trailing by three goals for a 7-4 end. Harrington then opened the second quarter with a free position goal. Wofford came back with a 3-0 run giving them a 10-5 advantage. Within the last four minutes of the second quarter, the Owls scored four straight times to cut the deficit back down to one, but Wofford managed to draw a whistle with a second left and scored a key goal to go up 12-10 at halftime. The Terriers came back in the third quarter and matched the six goals that the Owls scored before halftime for an 18-12 edge, before closing out for the eight-goal win.
NOTES:
-KSU outshot Wofford 39-32, 34-30 on shots on goal.
-KSU won the battle in groundballs (29-22), draw controls (20-19), and caused turnovers (9-8).
-Wofford had a key advantage in the net with 20 total saves in the game, to eight for the visiting Owls.
NEXT TIME OUT: The Owls will return home to face Queens in their Atlantic Sun Conference opener on Saturday, March 30 at 12 p.m. in Fifth Third Stadium.
