KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State women's lacrosse could not get past Queens' mid-match 7-1 run, as the Owls outshot the Royals but couldn't get enough in the back of the net in a 17-12 loss in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon from Fifth Third Stadium.
KEY PLAYERS: Natalie Welch led the way with a career-high five-goal performance, off six total shots. She was the only player to score over two goals though, with
Shannon Harrington,
Hannah Davis and
Caroline Farley all ending with a pair of scores each.
THE RUNDOWN: Queens opened with a 4-1 burst in the first 10 minutes of the game, but back-to-back goals from Harrington would lead to a 3-0 run for KSU.
Mia MacKenzie's score at 10:19 of the second quarter tied the game at 4-4. The Royals then reeled off three unanswered for a 7-4 edge, though Welch scored at the end of the half to bring KSU within two at halftime. Queens then scored four straight to open the third quarter, and KSU came no closer than four the rest of the way.
POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH LAURA MANESS
"Today's result did not go the way we wanted obviously. I was happy to see
Natalie Welch step up and take advantage of the scoring opportunities she had to create a new career high of goals for her, that was big for us in our attempts to make a rally. And with what she has meant to our program, it was also very notable for
Hannah Barth to beat the Kennesaw State career record for assist. As for the rest of the game, we're going to focus on the positives while fixing the things we need to fix before our next time out."
NOTES:
-Hannah Barth became KSU's all-time career assist leader in the game, as she posted one to reach 66 in her four years with the Black and Gold.
-
Lauren Dobbs had a good afternoon on the circle with eight draw controls.
-KSU finished with a 37-28 edge on shots, and 19-13 on draw controls, while Queens held a 21-14 advantage on ground balls.
NEXT TIME OUT: The Owls continue ASUN play with a road contest at Jacksonville on Thursday, April 4 at 3 pm in a game televised live on ESPN+.
