KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State women's lacrosse nearly rallied from a late four-game deficit, as the Owls scored three goals in the final 97 seconds and had a chance in front of the Vanderbilt goal in the final seconds but the game-tying attempt was high, leading to a 16-15 setback for KSU on Saturday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex. The loss dropped KSU to 4-3 on the year, while the Commodores improved to 2-1.
KEY PLAYERS: Caroline Farley and
Shannon Harrington led the Owls with four goals and eight points each.
Hannah Davis also added a hat trick in the contest to go along with a pair of assists.
Julia Weiss played the entire 60 minutes in goal and notched 12 saves, just two off her career-high.
THE RUNDOWN: It was a tight battle the entire afternoon. Vanderbilt scored the first two goals, but the Owls, as they would do all game long, would come back to tie the game. The Commodores scored a key goal in the final seconds of the first quarter for a 5-3 lead, and opened the second quarter with another score. Three straight scores from Harrington, Davis and Farley in a three-minute span brought the Owls back to a tie contest at 6-6. Vanderbilt again ended the quarter with the final score for a 7-6 halftime edge. The Owls were outscored 5-2 in the third quarter, falling behind 13-8, and it was a 16-11 contest with 3:14 to play. Harrington started the game-ending run for KSU, scoring at 2:47, while Farley added a goal at 1:37 to make it 16-13.
Alyssa Angelo recorded her first score of the game with 49 seconds left, and after winning the draw control, KSU scored again off a free position shot by Davis with 21 seconds to make it a 16-15 game. Angelo won the draw control for KSU to give the Owls one last shot, and she found a driving Harrington going towards the goal but her shot would go high above the goal in the final seconds.
POSTGAME QUOTES
KSU HEAD COACH LAURA MANESS
"I thought today our team came to fight for 60 minutes. We had numerous defensive stops and
Julia Weiss was a standout in cage. Offensively our team's clock management in the fourth quarter down the stretch put us in position to win the game as we scored high temp goals in the final few minutes. The energy was contagious and I'm proud of the product we put on the field today."
NEXT TIME OUT: The Owls will be off for the next week, and will return to action on Friday, March 15, with a 4 p.m. contest against Rider at Fifth Third Stadium.
