DETROIT – Kennesaw State women's lacrosse could not overcome a sluggish second quarter, as a furious six-goal rally came up just short in a 17-16 road loss at Detroit Mercy on Tuesday afternoon from Titan Field. The Owls trailed 17-10 with under five minutes to play when they scored six unanswered to close within a goal with 42 seconds on the clock, but could not win the final draw control and get off a potential tying shot.
KEY PLAYERS: All 16 goals came from a quartet of players, as
Caroline Farley and
Hannah Davis scored five goals each, while
Hannah Barth and
Shannon Harrington each added a hat trick as well.
Julia Weiss led the Owls' effort in the goal, coming up with 11 saves and a .524 save percentage.
THE RUNDOWN: The game was back and forth in the first quarter, and Farley opened the second quarter with a goal for a 4-3 Owl advantage. KSU would only attempt two total shots during the quarter however, while Detroit Mercy finished the quarter with 19, and reeled off six straight goals for a 9-4 halftime advantage, while UDM opened the third for a 10-4 edge. KSU found its offense after that, scoring five of the next seven to close within 12-9 at the end of the third thanks to a score from Farley. UDM looked to have the game in hand with a 4-0 spurt and a 17-10 lead with 7:17 on the clock in the fourth. The Owls wouldn't go away easily, as a score from Davis started a 6-0 run. That included three goals under the 1:30 mark, with a Barth goal bringing KSU to down one, 17-16 with 42 seconds to play. The Titans won the draw control and were able to run off enough time to finish off the game.
