GREENVILLE, S.C. – Kennesaw State (2-1) held a halftime lead on the road at Furman (1-1), but couldn't hold off the Paladins in the second half as the Owls suffered their first loss of the season, 19-15 on Sunday afternoon at Paladin Stadium.
KEY PLAYERS: Sophomore
Shannon Harrington tied her career-high against Furman, scoring six goals on six total shots to pace the Owls.
Mia MacKenzie led the team in assists with three and added three ground balls, while
Devon Webb led the team in ground balls (five) and caused turnovers (four).
THE RUNDOWN: Furman exploded for four quick goals in the first six minutes, opening up a 4-1 lead with 9:12 to play in the first quarter. Just as quickly the Owls countered back, as
Alyssa Angelo's goal started a 6-0 run for KSU. Four different Owls scored during that stretch, and Harrington's second goal gave KSU a 7-4 edge. The Owls then scored two straight to open the second quarter for their largest lead of the game, 9-5 with 12:31 on the clock. Furman scored four straight to knot the game at 9-9, but KSU scored two of the last three goals of the half for an 11-10 advantage going into halftime.
KSU finished the half with an 18-16 edge on shots, and 15-13 on shots on goal. Second half, the Paladins flipped it around, taking 20 shots to eight for KSU (13-6 on shots on goal). That led to a 4-0 spurt after halftime to put Furman up 14-11. Harrington and
Caroline Farley scored back-to-back for KSU to close within 14-13, but Furman countered again with three straight for a 17-13 lead. The Owls wouldn't give up, with another Farley-Harrington two-goal run making it a 17-15 game with 8:33 on the clock. That was the last game of the game for KSU though, and the Paladins scored twice more to close out the win.
POSTGAME QUOTES
KSU HEAD COACH LAURA MANESS
"I thought we played hard in the first half, but we needed to come out and play at a higher level in the second. We had moments of great plays on defense, midfield, and offense, but we need to figure out how to play the whole 60 minutes for us to win a road game at a place like Furman. Playing three games in seven days was tough, but I feel we will learn and grown from this week into next week."
NOTES
-Also have multi-goal games for the Owls were Angelo,
Hannah Barth and Farley, all with two goals each.
