KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State finished the regular season in thrilling fashion, as the Owls rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit and scored the game-winner with just nine seconds on the clock for a 15-14 victory over Lindenwood in ASUN women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. The Senior Day victory for the Owls also marked the first time they've won two straight games this season and moved KSU into the fifth seed in next week's ASUN Tournament. KSU and the Lions both finished the conference season with a 3-4 mark, and the Owls win the tiebreaker thanks to their victory, while Lindenwood was sent down to the sixth seed in the tournament with the loss in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
KEY PLAYERS: Freshman
Shannon Harrington was the start on Saturday, as she scored the final two goals of the game to bring KSU back from a one-goal deficit to the one-goal victory. She led all scorers with five goals in the contest.
Jaxsyn Schonewille and
Mia MacKenzie both posted hat tricks on their Senior Day, while classmate
Natalie Welch along with
Caroline Farley both scored two goals each.
Hannah Barth led all players with four assists as well. Julie Weiss played the first 30 minutes in the next for KSU and collected eight saves while allowing just six goals.
THE RUNDOWN: The Lions roared out to a 3-0 lead, with all three goals coming in an 83-second span. KSU scored the final goal of the first quarter, and then the first two of the second to knot the game at 3-3 thanks to back-to-back scores from Farley. The game was tied again at 6-6 right before the half, and the teams then traded the first six goals of the third quarter.
Lindenwood scored twice for an 11-9 lead and were up 11-10 going into the final quarter. A 4-0 KSU spurt was countered by a 3-0 run by Lindenwood, giving the Lions a 14-13 edge with 4:07 to play. The visitors would not score again, and KSU tied the game on a Harrington score with 2:51 on the clock before claiming the final score and the victory with nine seconds to play.
QUOTABLE:
"I'm so proud of the seniors and the team for supporting the importance of the day. Everyone went that extra mile for the seniors to honor them as they continued to fight and battle for those plays all the way through the 60 minutes to put them in that great position. Today we were able to take advantage of their yellow cards and I think that helped shift the momentum into our hands." To win our past two games, this is great momentum going into conference tournament as we showed composure and finished the game out. This is a great message to send to our conference opponents that we are ready for postseason."
- KSU Head Coach Laura Maness
