JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Kennesaw State led after the first quarter but couldn't overcome a 24-minute scoring drought mid-game, as the fifth-seeded Owls fell 14-8 to fourth-seed Queens in the first round of the 2023 ASUN Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday afternoon from Rock Stadium on the campus of Jacksonville University.
KEY PLAYERS: A trio of players finished with two goals each, paced by ASUN Freshman of the Year
Shannon Harrington who scored two of the game's first four goals. Also with two goals each were
Jaxsyn Schonewille and
Caroline Farley.
Bailey Wilson finished with six draw controls, in the process setting a new school single season record with 161, topping the previous record of 155 set by
Siena Gore in 2022.
Julia Weiss played the first half in net for the Owls and collected eight of the team's 13 saves.
THE RUNDOWN: KSU scored the first two goals of the game thanks to Harrington and Schonewille. After Queens got on the board, Harrington scored again for a 3-1 KSU edge at the 8:38 mark of the first quarter.
Natalie Welch then scored the final goal of the opening quarter to put KSU up 4-3. The Owls' offense went cold in the second quarter though, and Queens took advantage by reeling off seven unanswered goals over the second and third quarter to go up 10-4. KSU cut the edge to five twice but couldn't come any closer, falling to the Royals by the 14-8 score for the second time this season.
QUOTABLE:
"I thought we got off to a great start. We went through a bit of a drought in the second quarter but I was impressed with the refocus at halftime to keep fighting. Hat's off to our seniors for fighting through until the end and setting a great tone. Our younger players are ready to come back next year and work hard to reach new heights. I'm proud of this team."
