KENNESAW, Ga. – A big day at the plate from Donovan Cash powered Kennesaw State baseball to its first weekend sweep of the year with a 12-8 win over Long Island University on Sunday afternoon. The victory extends the Owls' (5-1) win streak to five games while the Sharks fall to 0-6.
Cash led the Owls' offense with his third home run of the series. The KSU first baseman finished 3-for-5 and tied his career-high with four RBI. He ended the weekend 8-for-14 with 10 RBI.
Blake Aita (2-0) earned the win in his second outing after he entered out of the pen in the third frame. The freshman tossed 4.0 innings and struck out five.
Smith Pinson tossed the final two frames for the KSU bullpen. The right-hander surrendered zero runs on two hits to seal the game.
The Kennesaw State offense scored double-digit runs and hits in every game this weekend. The team belted 12 hits and 12 runs on Sunday to complete the weekend sweep over Long Island.
Hudson Mimbs scored three times out of the nine hole and put together a 3-for-4 afternoon. The shortstop belted two doubles and scored three runs in the win.
Zac Corbin collected his third straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-5 performance. The leadoff hitter blasted a three-run shot to right field in his second at-bat and finished with two runs scored.
Brayden Eidson had a season-high three hits, including a solo home run off the scoreboard. The center fielder also added a double and three runs scored in the victory.
The Owls got on the board with two runs in the first. Cash singled in-between walks from Colina and Chirello to load the bases. A balk from the Sharks' pitcher brought home the first KSU run followed by a fielder's choice from Hassan that scored Cash as he dove around a tag from the catcher.
LIU tied the ballgame with two runs in the second, but Corbin answered with a three-run blast over the right-field wall. The 404 ft. shot was the first of the year for the KSU second baseman and gave the Owls a 5-2 lead.
Kennesaw State made the call to the bullpen in the third with runners in scoring position. Aita fanned the first two Sharks he faced then induced a ground ball to extinguish the LIU threat.
In the fourth, Mimbs laced his second double of the afternoon to center field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch then came around to score on a fielder's choice from Corbin. This pushed the KSU advantage to 6-2.
Long Island connected for two home runs in the sixth that tied the score, but the Owls answered with two long balls of their own to retake the lead.
Eidson launched a deep fly off the scoreboard to put Kennesaw State up, 7-6. With the bases loaded, Cash connected for his first grand slam of the season to give the Owls an 11-6 advantage. The long ball was the third of the weekend for the KSU first baseman.
The Sharks added two in the seventh, but an error in the bottom half scored a hustling Eidson. This moved the score to 12-8 which held as the final.
KSU is back in action next Wednesday, Mar. 1 as it heads to Georgia Tech for the first road game of the season. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. inside Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium. This will be the 29th matchup between the two programs in series history.
