KENNESAW, Ga. – The bats were scorching hot in Kennesaw State baseball's 19-14 win over Long Island University on Saturday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium. The victory extended the Owls' (4-1) win-streak to four games, while LIU falls to 0-5 on the season.
Kennesaw State got another strong start from Blake Wehunt (1-0) who earned the win in his second outing. The right-hander tossed 5.0 innings and allowed one run on six hits. He finished with six strikeouts. Â
For the second day in-a-row, the Kennesaw State offense collected double-digit hits. The team finished with 17 total and scored a season-high, 19 runs. This marked the second-most runs KSU has scored in a game in the last five seasons behind the 23 it scored last year versus Stetson (May 13, 2022).
Offensively, Jamarie Brooks led the way as he put together a 3-for-3 performance. The freshman slashed a double and triple while registering two RBI. Brooks also scored two runs and drew a walk in the win. Â
Hudson Mimbs contributed a 1-for-4 day, but his one hit was a big one. The third baseman launched a home run deep to left field that drove in three for the Owls. Mimbs also walked twice in the contest.
Donovan Cash launched his second home run of the series and finished 2-for-4 with a walk. The Owls' first baseman tallied three RBI and three runs scored in the game.
Zac Corbin added another multi-hit game with a 3-for-4 afternoon in the leadoff spot. He also added two walks, three runs scored and two stolen bases in the contest. Â
Aaron Posey entered off the bench and collected two hits. The freshman was 2-for-3 with one RBI against the Sharks in his season debut.
The Owls broke things open in the second inning by scoring six times. Spencer Hanson reached on an error then scored when Brooks tripled off the center field wall. Mimbs followed with a walk then Jay Knowles was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
A wild pitch scored Brooks and a Corbin single brought home Mimbs to move the score to 3-0. Another wild pitch scored Knowles then a Cash fielder's choice brought in the fifth Owl of the inning. Nick Colina, who worked a two-out walk, scored on a passed ball to give KSU a 6-0 advantage.
Kennesaw State added seven more in the fourth to extend the lead to 13-0. Corbin walked then stole his second base of the afternoon to move into scoring position. Colina followed by ripping a double to left-center field to record his 7th RBI of the season.
A Cash walk preceded an RBI double from Jackson Chirello. Nick Hassan brought in the third Owl of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field. Hanson ripped a single up the middle to score the fourth run of the frame then Brooks doubled to put runners on second and third.
With runners in scoring position, Mimbs sent the first pitch of his at-bat off the top of the Bailey Building in left field. The 390 ft. blast scored three to increase KSU's lead to 13-0.
In the fifth, Colina led off with a walk before Cash launched his third long ball of the year. The Owls collected three more hits in the frame and added another run to push their advantage to 16-1.
Corbin's second walk of the afternoon began the sixth frame. The second baseman came around to score on a triple from Colina, who crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Cash and Chirello both singled before Posey collected his second hit of the afternoon to record his first career RBI. This moved the score to 19-4.
The Sharks scored 10 runs in the final three frames to cut the deficit to 19-14, which held as the final.
KSU is back in action tomorrow as it aims to complete the sweep over LIU. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. inside Stillwell Stadium. Click here to purchase tickets.
