WASHINGTON, D.C. – Kennesaw State women's lacrosse limited George Washington to just one first half goal and held off a fourth quarter rally to claim a 12-8 road victory on Thursday afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field. It was the second straight road win for the Owls, and also gave the team its best-ever start to the season after 10 games with a 6-4 overall record.
KEY PLAYERS: Bailey Wilson notched a first-half hat trick and added another in the second half for a team-high four goals.
Siena Gore posted two goals and two assists, while
McKenzie Jackson recorded a pair of scores as well. Julie Weiss played the first half in goal for KSU and gave up just one goal while collecting six saves.
THE RUNDOWN: Behind the play of Weiss in the net, the Owls put on a dominating defensive performance in the first 30 minutes. The lone goal came in the third minute of the game after KSU scored just thirty seconds in for an early lead. Following that tie, the Owls reeled off the next four goals of the contest for a 6-1 halftime advantage.
The scoring picked up in the third quarter, as GW closed the margin to three after outscoring the Owls 4-2, and then opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back scores to make it a one-goal game at 8-7. Gore, the nation's leading scorer who had been held scoreless to that point, scored two straight just two minutes apart to put the Owls back up by three. KSU allowed just one more goal the rest of the game to claim its third road win of the season.
QUOTEABLE: "We had a great start in the first half, we really dominated the draw circle and took advantage of their yellow cards. I give credit to GW for battling back in the second half, but I think we countered nicely to close the game. Notably I think Bailey had a great offensive day, while our defensive unit locked it down to hold the other team to eight goals total." -
KSU head coach Laura Maness.
