TALLAHASSEE – Kennesaw State baseball fell to Florida State in the final midweek game of the season by a score of 7-3 on Tuesday night inside Dick Howser Stadium. The Owls (23-28) brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the eighth but were unable to convert against the Seminoles (21-30).
Trailing 5-2 late in the game, Brayden Eidson doubled and advanced to third on a single from Zac Corbin. A sacrifice fly from Spencer Hanson cut the deficit to two before Nick Colina drew a walk to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Unfortunately for the Owls, a tough call on an appeal to first base ended the rally.
Tyler Franks made his first start on the mound and tossed 3.1 scoreless innings. The left hander surrendered two hits and struck out three batters during his 16th outing of the year.
Luke Cooper entered in relief of Franks with one out and two runners on. The senior retired both batters he faced to keep the Seminoles off the scoreboard.
The Kennesaw State offense collected five hits against the FSU pitching staff and had six starters reach base safely.
Nick Colina finished 1-for-2 with a home run and two walks in the contest. The outfielder increased his walk total to 52, which is tops in the ASUN Conference and most in KSU baseball history.
Aaron Posey belted a double in his first at-bat and scored the first KSU run. The catcher finished 1-for-3 with a walk and has hit safely in four-straight games.
Other offensive notables were Eidson (1-for-4, double and run scored), Corbin (1-for-4) and Wade Richardson (1-for-3, sac bunt).
Kennesaw State plated its first run in the third inning. Posey led off with a double then came around to score when Richardson placed a beautiful sac bunt that was thrown away by the FSU pitcher.
Colina mashed a no-doubter to lead off the fourth inning. The homer was the sixth of the year for the senior and gave KSU a 2-0 advantage.
Florida State scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.
Eidson slashed a double in the eighth and advanced to third when Corbin ripped a line drive up the middle. Spencer Hanson followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Eidson and cut the FSU advantage to 5-3.
Florida State added two runs in the bottom half to increase its lead to 7-3, which held as the final.
The Owls finish the 2023 regular season at Florida Gulf Coast with a three-game ASUN series. With this being the final week on the schedule, game one will begin on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. inside Swanson Stadium. Games two and three will follow on Friday and Saturday.
