ROCK HILL, S.C. – Kennesaw State outplayed the home team at both the start and the finish of the game, but couldn't overcome a second and third quarter scoring slump as the Owls (1-1) dropped their first road game of the season, 16-13 at Winthrop on Wednesday afternoon in women's college lacrosse action at Eagle Field.
KEY PLAYERS: Hannah Barth paced the Owls with career-highs in both goals (four) and points (seven), while
Hannah Davis also set a new career-best with four goals.
Mia MacKenzie added two goals and an assist, while
Leyton Payne finished with a goal and two assist to give both players three points each.
THE RUNDOWN: A man-up goal from MacKenzie and back-to-back scores from Davis and Barth gave the Owls an early 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Winthrop responded with a game-changing 5-0 run to go up 5-3. KSU would get another goal from Barth to close out the quarter down 5-4. The Eagles kept up the pressure in the second though, scoring three of the four goals in the quarter for an 8-5 halftime edge.
Carolina Farley opened the second half with a score for KSU, but that was just one of two Owl goals in the third quarter. Winthrop finished the quarter with a 4-2 edge for a 12-7 advantage. KSU made a run in the fourth quarter, with a 3-0 run that included a pair of Davis goals bringing them within 13-11. It was a two-goal again at 14-12, but Winthrop added a pair of goals to seal the win.
QUOTABLE:
"We came out with fire, and ended with fire. We need to make sure to not get in any slumps throughout. I was very impressed with
Hannah Barth,
Hannah Davis offensively down the stretch. Jaxsyn Shonewille and
Bailey Wilson were critical on the draw circle as well to put us in a position to come back."
-KSU Head Coach Laura Maness
NOTES:
-The Eagles had six more shots (29-23) and seven more shots on goal (24-17) for the night. That was helped by their defense as they forced KSU into 20 turnovers while committing only 13 themselves.
-KSU did hold an 18-15 edge on draw controls, highlighted by nine from Wilson.
NEXT TIME OUT: The Owls are back home on Sunday, Feb. 19 when they host Longwood at Fifth Third Bank Stadium with an 11 a.m. start. The game will be streamed live on KSUOwls.com.
