CINCINNATI, Ohio – No. 18/19 Kennesaw State football fell to defending College Football Playoff semifinalist Cincinnati by a score of 63-10 on Saturday afternoon in front of 39,014 fans inside Nippert Stadium, UC's sixth-largest crowd ever. The game was the Owls' fourth all-time contest against an FBS opponent in the program's eight-year history.
Offensively,
Preston Daniels led the way as the junior set a new career-high in rushing attempts with 21. Daniels compiled 59 yards on the ground with one touchdown. His four-yard rushing touchdown extended the Owls' double-digit scoring streak to 61 games.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Garland Benyard paced the Owls with a team-high nine tackles (six solo) and two tackles-for-loss. The linebacker has led the Owls in total tackles in each of KSU's first two games.
Adam Watkins also made an impact as he added four tackles (three solo) and one sack. Watkins four tackles set a new career-high for the sophomore who has registered a sack in back-to-back games.
Benyard started the afternoon with a boom and forced a strip sack on the first play of the game. The ball was recovered by Cincinnati on its own four-yard line to give the KSU linebacker the second sack of his collegiate career.
The KSU defense stood strong and forced a three-and-out on Cincinnati's first possession. This marked back-to-back games that the Owl defense did not allow a first down on its opponent's opening drive.
The Kennesaw State offense drove down the field on its first possession after an incredible catch from
Blake Bohannon on third-and-long extended the Owls' drive.
Xavier Shepherd found his receiver for a 28-yard pass that marked the first reception of Bohannon's career.
Halfway through the second quarter, senior kicker
Nathan Robertson got KSU on the board with a 30-yard field goal. The Owls started with great field position after
Juandarion Silas forced a fumble that was recovered by
Demetric Barnes on the Cincinnati 20-yard line.
Robertson blasted the ball through the uprights to mark the 235th point scored of his career. This ranks third in the KSU record books behind
Chandler Burks (336) and Justin Thompson (316).
In the fourth quarter, the Owls put together a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a touchdown. On third down, Daniels broke through the line for a four-yard touchdown run. The score capped a 10-play, 75-yard drive for the Owls.
KSU will be on a bye next week and prepare for its home opener at Fifth Third Bank Stadium against Wofford on Saturday, Sept. 24 with a 6:00 p.m. kickoff. The Owls hold a 3-0 lead over the Terriers in the all-time series, including last year's 31-10 victory in Spartanburg, S.C. Click
