WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The Kennesaw State men and women's track and field teams both sit in first place after the first day at the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships. The men are currently leading Northern Kentucky 56-37 and the women are leading Jacksonville 65.50-52 after some great performances on day one.
The day started out with the combined eventers competing in the pentathlon on the women's side and the heptathlon on the men's side. Freshman
Jordan Gray won the pentathlon scoring 3,704 points in her first conference pentathlon. Gray finished second or third in four of the five pentathlon events. She secured the win in the pentathlon with a win in the 800m cruising home in 2:29.09. Sophomore
Shakedra Robinson finished second in the pentathlon. Robinson tied the school pentathlon high jump record clearing 1.73m (5'8.00).
Bilal Abdullah leads the heptathlon with 3,186 points. Abdullah took home wins in three of four pentathlon events Saturday including setting new conference heptathlon records in the 60m (6.89) and the long jump with a jump of 7.01m (23'0.0). He leads teammate
Joshua Mulder who is second place, by 402 points. The heptathlon will finish up on Sunday.
On the men's side, the long jump netted a lot of points for the Owls.
Andre Dorsey would go on and win the long jump with a jump of 7.18m (23'6.75.
Rasmus Rooks would finish second in the LJ with a jump of 6.88m (22'7.00").
Kaarel Mangusson would finish third after leaping 6.87m (22'06.50) .
Nigel Hughes and
Sean Blassingame also collected points for the Owls finishing sixth and seventh respectively.
Dorsey would return to the medal stand later in the day after collecting a win in the high jump with a jump of 2.16m (7'1.00) . Mangusson,
Josh Hill , and
Joseph Yates would also collect points for the Owls as they finished fourth through sixth respectively.
In the shot put, freshman
Daniel McKune took home the Bronze Medal with a toss of 13.50m (44'3.50).
On the track,
Rhys Glastonbury finished in the 3000m race with a flat track school record setting time of 8:17.80.
"The men dealt a crushing blow today," Director of Track and Field
Andy Eggerth said. "We claimed five of the top six spots in the long jump, and four of the top six spots in high jump, with Dorsey winning both. Four athletes broke the conference record in the 3k, with
Rhys Glastonbury being one of those guys, which also broke the flat track school record. Daniel (McKune) threw well in the shot, earning the bronze medal and Martynas (Sedys) also scored with about a meter lifetime best performance. And our guys make up half of the 60m dash final for tomorrow. One of the highlights will surely be Bilal (Abdullah) as he's broken three conference records of the four heptathlon events today and is well on his way to a top 5 mark in the NCAA! "
On the women's side,
De'Von Johnson won the long jump with a jump of 5.90m (19'4.25).
Senior
Lauren Wilson and
Erica Sergeant joined the medal stand finishing second and third in the pole vault.
Andzelika Bobrova,
Kentrell White,
Sydney Williams, and
Kidan Kidane set a school record in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:10.36 that was good for second place.
Joscelyn Powell flew to the school record in the 60m hurdles finishing second overall in the qualifier with a time of 8.54.

nd place finish in the pentathlon. De'Von (Johnson) wins the long jump only 2 centimeters off the school record. Jocselyn (Powell) breaks the school record in the 60h. We had a tremendous run in the DMR, setting the school record and claiming the silver medal. The ladies have put themselves in great position, now they just have to execute tomorrow."
