KENNESAW, Ga. –
The Kennesaw State women's lacrosse team got their first win of the season by beating the Delaware State Hornets 17-7 on a dreary day at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

"Winning is always awesome and feels good," head coach Kristina Llanes said. "It's always a good way for the team to see where their work is going and making sure we build this program right and we get the wins we're working for."

Taylor McGhee once again led the team with four goals. She also chipped in picking up five ground balls, winning four draw controls and causing two turnovers.

"Taylor McGhee is working really hard on and off the field and she's one of those student athletes that commits 100 percent of herself to being a leader in this program which means she's working hard in the weight room, she's working hard during conditioning with our sports performance team. That kind of focus has helped her see gains on the field. Taylor is a leader that we look to on and off the field and today was no exception to that."

Kennesaw State got the scoring going early as they took a 7-1 lead in the first ten minutes of the game. The Hornets answered with two straight goals, but Albertson ended the run right before half with her first career goal making the score 8-3 going into the break.

Coming out of the locker room, the Owls came out with a surge, scoring the half's first four goals to go up 12-3 putting the game out of reach.

Sydney Farwick, Kyra Fitzgerald and Monica Albertson each had three goals apiece for the team.

KSU assisted 10 of their 17 goals on the afternoon.

The Owls had 30 total shots on the afternoon.

Defensively, Kennesaw State had 15 caused turnovers, and picked up 31 ground balls with McGhee and Farwick leading the team with five each.

Allison Senft made nine saves playing the full 60 minutes.

With the win the Owls move to 1-4 on the season that has already seen some very tough opponents. Llanes set up a challenging schedule early for her team to see what areas they needed to improve in and they saw some of those improvements taking place today.

"It's always a challenge to face the opponents early, and we put the schedule together where we're seeing strong opponents early to help us see where we need to improve," Llanes said. "We put a lot of time and effort into those games and that preparation becomes cumulative throughout the season. We want to make sure we're retaining the education we get from each opponent and we feel like we put that together this week against Delaware State."

The team will now prepare to play Campbell next Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m.
