KENNESAW, Ga.
– The Kennesaw State lacrosse team came up short against Winthrop on Tuesday, February 10 in the home opener at Fifth Third Bank Stadium as the Eagles topped the Owls 18-5.

"I felt that today was definitely progress in the right direction," head coach Kristina Llanes said. "After our outcome at Vanderbilt, we were really looking to focus on our draw control scenario and our draw control personel. I felt like Haley O'Donoghue, Connor Zophy and Megan Tobias did a really good job today picking up new roles. I think Taylor McGhee really came out hard for us on the offensive end for us and in the midfield transitions we made some really good calls. Laura Jordan stepped up coming out of the defensive end. On offense, we were really trying to get things moving and get more opportunities and we weren't taking smart shots. Allison Senft gave us some support in the backfield and really stepped up when she was in the cage."

Sophomore Taylor McGhee led the team with three goals in the game with two of them coming on free position shots. Sydney Farwick accounted for two more to give her six on the season.

Kyra Fitzgerald and Megan Nicoletti each had one assist, and Laura Jordan set a career high picking up five ground balls.

It was a defensive struggle early with the Eagles scoring twice in the first 15 minutes to take a 2-0 lead. In the next five minutes, Winthrop opened the scoring up with a 7-0 run to go up 9-0.

McGhee stopped the run by putting her first goal of the game in the net on a free position shot.

The Owls added one more before halftime as Nicoletti fed Farwick to bring the score to 9-2.

In the second half, McGhee once again got the scoring going for the Owls netting her second goal of the night.

With 7:07 left in the game, Fitzgerald fed Farwick for her team leading sixth of the season.

With the clock winding down, the Owls were still pushing as McGhee got her third goal with 24 seconds to go to bring us to the final score of 18-5.

Allison Senft had 10 saves in the game for the Owls.

The Owls were six for eight on clear attempts against the Eagles.

KSU is back on the road this weekend as they travel to Davidson to play the Wildcats at 1 p.m.
