SOC: Owls Head to Jacksonville for Pair of A-Sun Matches

THE MATCHES:
The Kennesaw State soccer team is set to open a three-match road swing, first traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., for a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference contest this weekend. The Owls starts off its trip with a 7 p.m. ET match against Jacksonville on Friday, Oct. 10, followed by a 1 p.m. match against North Florida on Sunday, Oct. 12.
 
Both matches will be featured on ASun.TV, with live stats also available for both matches via KSUOwls.com.

THE OPPONENTS:
Jacksonville/North Florida
After opening the conference slate with back-to-back wins (vs. Stetson, at Northern Kentucky), the Dolphins dropped its first league match last weekend in a 1-0 setback at Lipscomb. Five of JU's eight wins have come at home this season in Southern Oak Stadium as Kaitlyn Bassett leads the offense with 10 points (4g, 2a). Goalkeeper Sarah Sierra owns a 0.78 goals against average and has only let in 11 scores this season.
 
The Ospreys are coming off of their first A-Sun win, defeating NKU 2-1 and are 1-1-1 in the conference with a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Lipscomb and a 3-0 loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Kayla Gray leads UNF with seven points (3g, 1a).
 
THE SERIES:
The Owls hold advantages in both series against Jacksonville and North Florida, owning a slight 7-6-0 edge against the Dolphins and a 10-3-1 edge against the Ospreys. KSU split its two meetings with JU last season, taking a 2-1 double-overtime win in the teams' regular season meeting in Jacksonville, Fla., on Oct. 25, 2013, before falling 2-0 in the A-Sun semifinals on Nov. 8 in Fort Myers, Fla. UNF won the lone meeting between the two teams a season ago, earning a 4-1 victory on the final day of the regular season (Oct. 27, 2013) in Jacksonville, Fla.  
 
LAST TIME OUT:
The Kennesaw State soccer team split a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference matches last weekend as the Owls earned an important 2-1 league win over Stetson on Friday, before falling 2-1 in a hard-fought overtime battle with Florida Gulf Coast. Against the Hatters, freshman Ashtah Das and senior Julia Nelson scored second half goals to propel the Owls to the win. On Sunday, the Owls pushed 2013 regular season A-Sun champion FGCU to overtime after letting in an early goal in the first half. Freshman Marit Sandtroeen evened the match with her third career goal in 63rd minute, before the Eagles ended the match with the game winner on a corner kick service in the 93rd minute of play.

Kennesaw State next wraps up its three-match road trip as the Owls conclude their A-Sun road schedule in Highland Heights, Ky., facing Northern Kentucky on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
 
NEWS AND NOTES:
Point-Getters
The Owls have had nine players register points during the season, with three newcomers (Marit Sandtroeen, Ashtah Das and Mali Kokvoll) earning their first career points during their freshman campaigns.
 
Second Half Strong
KSU has scored nine of its 12 goals this season in the second half, while only allowing seven goals in the second period of action.
 
Corner Kicks
The Owls rank third in the Atlantic Sun Conference with 57 corners in 13 matches and are averaging 4.38 corners per match this season.
 
Gaughan Leading the Way
Sophomore Maggie Gaughan leads the Owls with 10 points on five goals this season. She sits in a tie for third in goals (five), while also ranking in the top 10 in points (10, t-sixth), points per game (0.83 points/game, t-seventh), goals per game (0.42 goals/game, fifth) and game-winning goals (t-third, two).
 
Sandtroeen Heating Up
Sandtroeen sits right behind Gaughan with seven points on three goals and an assist in her freshman campaign, with her three scores ranking in a tie for 10th in the conference.
 
Sandtroeen in A-Sun Action
In conference action, the Tynset, Norway native leads the Owls and ranks in a tie for seventh with three points on a goal and an assist and is averaging a point a game for KSU in A-Sun contests.
 
Reed on the Attack
Redshirt-sophomore Brittney Reed leads the team and ranks seventh in the A-Sun with 26 shots on the season and is averaging 2.17 shots per game, which sits fifth in the league in that category. In A-Sun play, Reed is averaging 3.33 shots per match, which also ranks fifth in that category.
 
Firsts vs. Stetson
Das registered her first career goal for the Owls in Friday's 2-1 win over Stetson. Das's goal came as the game-tying score, before senior Julia Nelson recorded her first goal of the season to win the match.
 
Owls in Goal
Sophomore Olivia Sturdivant and freshman Mady Carter have split time in goal this season for the Owls, with Sturdivant ranking seventh in the conference with a 1.76 goals against average, while Carter owns a 1.48 goals against average in conference matches for KSU. Sturdivant has collected 34 saves in 818 minutes for the Owls, while Carter has grabbed 14 saves in 382 minutes in her freshman campaign.
 
Calder Named Senior CLASS Award Nominee
On Sept. 2, senior Nicole Calder was named as one of 30 candidates for the 2014 women's soccer Senior CLASS Award. The list is comprised of 30 NCAA Division I seniors who have notable achievements in four areas – community, classroom, character and competition. The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, before the winner is announced during the 2014 Women's College Cup in December.
