KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State soccer fell to The Citadel, 1-0, this Friday evening at Walens Family Field at Fifth Third Stadium.
A 61
st minute goal by the Bulldogs broke the 0-0 draw. The Citadel outshot KSU 14-11 with both teams having six shots on target.
Coach Chris Cahill's Remarks
"We played very uncharacteristically of what we know about ourselves tonight," Cahill said. "Give credit to The Citadel, they played a very composed game, and it made us uncomfortable enough to put us on our heels. We must recover quickly and have a complete team performance on Sunday to get back on track."
First Half
The Citadel came out aggressive in the first half, recording the first five shots of the contest. In the 10
th minute, a ball inside the box drew
Charlee Bernal out of the goal. The fifth-year goalkeeper made the initial save before
Aubrey Diskin blocked the second shot on a wide-open net.
A similar play happened a few minutes later where Bernal was one-on-one with a Bulldog attacker. She made the point-blank save and freshman
Maci Stancil was able to back up her goalkeeper and deter the shot from going in.
Julia Balchen attempted the first shot for the Black and Gold in the 26
th minute but her shot went right to the keeper. Nearing the end of the first half,
Anabel Orozco went solo on the counterattack, pushing the ball into the 18-yard box. Unfortunately, she couldn't finish the individual build-up.
Second Half
After a relatively quiet 15 minutes to start the second half, the game-deciding sequence would occur. Orozco hit the crossbar off a header. After gaining possession, The Citadel methodically pushed the ball. Jasiah Pack carried it up the left flank and dumped it off to Samantha Grantham for the goal.
The Owls kept fighting, putting up six shots in the final 10 minutes but couldn't find the equalizer.

The Black and Gold will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to face Alabama State. The game will be streamed on the Hornet Sports Network with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
