SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A seventh-inning surge led the Owls to their first Conference USA win of the season and first of the
Selena Collins-Patterson era. KSU played a doubleheader on Saturday due to inclement weather in the forecast for Springfield.
The Owls took game one by a score of 11-5 but the Bears won game two 4-1 to take the series.
Jojo Johnson's game one grand slam capped off a slugfest as the Owls had four different players recorded two-plus hits.
Game 1: KSU 11, MoState 5
The Owls struck first in the top of the second inning. Two walks and a MoState error loaded the bases for
Savannah Frachiseur. The freshman took the pass for 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears retaliated. Three-straight hits with two outs put three on the board for MoState.
All three ducks were on the pond for the Black and Gold in the fifth.
Rylee Limberger hit a grounder to the shortstop, but she airmailed the throw to first, allowing
Hannah Harvey to score.
KSU once again pressured the Bears. Two walks and a single by
Alora Bevily set up
Macie Howes. The captain singled past the outstretched arm of the shortstop to tie the contest.
Ana Gore gave the Owls the lead with her third sacrifice fly of the season.
Seven runs in the seventh put the game out of reach for MoState.
Ava Brooke Strickland kicked things off with an RBI single. A MoState error made it 7-3, setting up
Jojo Johnson with everyone on. Johnson smacked it into left-center field for the grand slam.
The Bears scored two runs but the Owls walked away from game one with the comfortable 11-5 victory.
Game 2: MoState 4, KSU 1
It was a pitcher's duel through the first three innings as both teams combined for three runners in scoring position.
KSU generated some traffic in the top of the fourth. The top three batters got on but back-to-back grounders kept the game knotted at zero.
The Bears also got to KSU's pitching, breaking the scoreless drought. An Alexis Perales hit put a runner 60 feet away from home and a sacrifice fly was able to drive her home.
KSU quickly responded in the following frame. Strickland led off with a single before Harvey doubled to drive her home. The lead would be short-lived as MoState recorded an RBI double of its own to go up 2-1.
In the top of the sixth, the Black and Gold had a chance to tie the game or take the lead but couldn't bring a runner home.
MoState added two runs in the bottom half of the inning for the final 4-1 score.
On Deck
The Owls will head to The Volunteer State for the second game of the home-and-home with Chattanooga. The game is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m.
