ATLANTA – A seventh-inning rally wasn't enough as Kennesaw State softball fell to in-state rival Georgia State, 9-5, at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.
Six different Owls recorded a hit in tonight's contest. Macie Howes homered for a second-straight game, her sixth overall. That mark ties a career high for her in a single season, previously doing it in 2024.
Tonight was game one of a home-and-home between the Owls and the Panthers this season as GSU will come to The Saw on April 21.
How It Happened
Hannah Harvey tripled in her first at-bat to set up Howes. The usual catcher – playing first base – brought Harvey home off a sacrifice fly.
The Panthers had a chance to tie the game off a Chloe Hatcher double but Ana Gore gunned down the lead runner at home plate to end the inning.
After two base runners got on base in the bottom of the third, GSU would take the lead off KSU miscues.
The Black and Gold responded right back – first with a Howes homer – then Savannah Frachiseur knocked in Danielle Bailey with an extra-base hit.
GSU scored five in the bottom of the fourth off two bases-clearing doubles. It tacked on an additional run in the fifth.
The Owls didn't go down without a fight. Jojo Johnson scored Gore off of the rare two-base sacrifice fly. They loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs. Alora Bevily walked in one but GSU was able to get the next three batters out to strand the bases loaded.
Notes from the Diamond
- Macie Howes homered for a second-straight game. It marks the second time the senior has done so this season. She homered in three consecutive games against Furman, Omaha and Chattanooga (Feb. 20-21). Howes has a seven-game hitting streak.
- Savannah Frachiseur made her first career start behind the dish. Howes, the usual starting catcher, slid over to first base for the first time since her first collegiate game against North Dakota State (Feb. 10, 2023) when she was at Cal Baptist.
- Alora Bevily has tallied a hit in six of the last seven games.
