KSU Makes History with Victory Over Virginia Tech

KENNESAW, Ga. — Kennesaw State women's tennis reached a new milestone in its history with its first all-time win over a power conference opponent in a 4-3 victory over Virginia Tech on Tuesday afternoon at Betty Siegel Courts.

The Owls also extended their win streak to six consecutive matches, the program's longest such streak since taking seven straight from February 12 to March 8, 2022.

"There are no words to describe how happy Matt and I are for this team and this win," said assistant coach Taylor Dean. "We've been putting in the work, and it's finally paying off. This win is for the girls who are currently on the team, but also for the girls who have been part of this team for the past seven years. It feels so special. We'll be enjoying this one for sure, but we have to keep our focus as we take on Mercer tomorrow."

With the match tied 3-3, the result hung in the balance on court five in a bout between Terezia Baraniakova and the Hokies' Linda Ziets-Segura. Baraniakova dropped the first set 3-6, but battled back to win her fourth straight singles match with scores of 6-2 and 6-3 in sets two and three on court five.

Maria Ivankovic and Sofia Madrid won on courts three and two, respectively, while the Owls took their first point of the day on a Virginia Tech court-six forfeit.

Ivankovic won the day's quickest singles match in 1 hour and 17 minutes with scores of 6-2 and 6-4 over the Hokies' Mila Mulready. Madrid took her fourth straight in singles with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Arina Gamretkaia on court two.

Virginia Tech won the doubles point on courts one and two at 6-4 and 6-1, respectively. The Hokies' Gamretkaia and Ozlem Uslu, the nation's 51st-ranked pair, overcame Madrid and Ema Baraniakova on court one.

"Coach Dean just did a master class of coaching today," said KSU director of tennis Matt Emery. "We needed four singles points after losing a tough doubles point, and she pulled through three of them."
