MACON, Ga. — Kennesaw State women's tennis won its second match in as many days and seventh straight overall in a 4-1 defeat of Mercer on Wednesday afternoon at Copelan Tennis Complex.
The Owls' win streak is their longest since nine consecutive in 2022. KSU now owns a five-match win streak over in-state foe Mercer. The Owls have not lost to the Bears since 2018.
Fresh off a milestone 4-3 win over Virginia Tech on Tuesday, KSU carried its momentum with it on the road and into doubles play in Macon.
"In general, it's not easy to come off an emotional win and then hit the road immediately and play the next day," said KSU director of tennis
Matt Emery. "It certainly isn't easy against a tough and well-coached Mercer team. I am really proud of the women and how they rose to the challenge today."
Forty-three minutes into the match, the Owls had secured the doubles point with
Sofia Madrid and
Ema Baraniakova taking court one 6-2, and
Maria Ivankovic and
Irene Serrano Maestre taking court three 6-4. Ivankovic and Serrano Maestre are now on a three-match doubles win streak.
Madrid gave KSU a 2-0 lead with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-0, defeat of Mercer's Tea Zivic on court two. Wednesday's singles result gives Madrid a fifth consecutive win.
The Bears registered their lone point of the day with a court-five win in singles. Baraniakova and Serrano Maestre then countered with the winning points for KSU. Both registered straight-set wins, with Baraniakova overcoming Marina De Diego Quinones 6-0, 7-6, and Serrano Maestre defeating Marie Bannmeyer 6-2, 7-5.
