KSU Knocks Off No. 58 South Alabama in Eighth Straight Win

KENNESAW, Ga. — Kennesaw State women's tennis extended its winning streak to eight matches and defeated its highest-ranked opponent in program history in a 4-0 blanking of No. 58 South Alabama on Friday afternoon at Betty Siegel Courts.

The Owls' eight-match winning streak since Feb. 18 is tied with a streak from March 18 to April 8, 2000, for the second-longest in program history. Not only did KSU extend its own streak, but it became the first team this season to defeat the previously 10-0 Jaguars.

"Just a great effort today from the women across the board," said KSU director of tennis Matt Emery. "We had some very good individual performances as always, but today was about the whole team pulling together all match."

The Owls started strong and didn't let up as they won the doubles point and the first five sets in singles.

Ema Baraniakova and Sofia Madrid defeated South Alabama's Kenza Elakili and Manal Ennciri 6-2 on court one. Irene Serrano Maestre and Maria Ivankovic secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Jade Marie and Cristina Tchanichev on three.

Izabelle Persson took court five (6-3, 6-4) in straight sets for KSU's first singles point. Baraniakova and Madrid then wrapped up the match with straight-set wins on one and two, respectively. Baraniakova overcame the Jaguars' Rio Maeda 6-4, 6-1, while Madrid defeated Ennaciri 6-4, 6-4.

"I want to give a huge shoutout to Ema, Sofia and Izabelle for closing out their matches and not letting a good team like South Alabama hang around," Emery said. "I know the women are hungry to get right back out there on Sunday on the road against a good Lipscomb team."
