KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State soccer was shut out, 2-0, by No. 23 Liberty at Walens Family Field at Fifth Third Stadium. Tonight served as the Southern Poly men's soccer alumni game, with members of the Hornets soccer program being recognized at halftime.
The Lady Flames were in control from the kickoff, outshooting the Owls 21-2, while dominating possession 64-36%.
Coach Chris Cahill's Remarks
"I'm pleased with the focus and effort," Cahill said. "The team worked hard all week and were prepared for this game. Credit to Liberty, they are a very good team, and we couldn't solve a few moments. We will move forward and focus on the next obstacle."
"I would like to thank Kom and everyone from Southern Poly for coming out and supporting us tonight. I hope this is the start of a great relationship between our two programs."
How It Happened
LU put on the pressure immediately. In the first 15 minutes, it had six shots, three of which were saved by Bernal. In the 23
rd minute, the chances turned into a goal. A ball deflected off an Owl right to Halle Engle deep in the box. She sent a cross to Carly Keene, who slotted it to give the Lady Flames a 1-0 lead.
In the first 10 minutes, the Black and Gold generated a look of their own.
Caroline Shaw – who got the start tonight – took a shot from the left wing but it was stopped.
The 1-0 deficit carried halfway into the second frame. A Liberty shot was saved but the Owls couldn't clear the ball. The clearance attempt landed in front of Audrey Heustis, who one-timed it for the score. The play was original called offsides, but VAR reviewed it and changed it to a goal.
Ava Bradford would record KSU's second shot on target in the 78
th minute but to no avail.
