KSU Falls to Ranked Memphis in Season Opener

KENNESAW, Ga. – After its first two matches were canceled, the Kennesaw State soccer team opened the 2025 season against Memphis at the newly named Walens Family Field at Fifth Third Stadium, falling by a score of 7-0.

Anna Economopoulos, Sara Hill, Caroline Shaw, Sydni Whitehead and Rebecca Womer all made their Owls debut.

First Half
The Black and Gold were the first to apply pressure. Womer drew a yellow card just outside the box in the fourth minute. Anabel Orozco took the free kick but the shot sailed high.

The rest of the first half was all Memphis. The Tigers' first goal came in the 10th minute. Ai Kitagawa took the corner and scored directly off the set piece with the shot deflecting off Charlee Bernal.

Reigning American Freshman of the Week Ellis Kelly scored off the feed from Elise Perron to extended Memphis's lead to 2-0.

Back-to-back goals in the 32nd and 34th minutes pushed the Tigers' lead to four before Taliah Brooks capped off the half with a backheel goal to make it 5-0.

Second Half
The Tigers kept the pressure on to start the second half. They hit the post off a corner two minutes in.

The Owls got their second shot of the evening in the 53rd minutes when Aly Bryan set up Brenna Young on the cross but her header was wide right.

Memphis tacked on two more goals in the span of four minutes to make the score 7-0 which would remain until the final whistle.

Hill subbed in for Bernal in the 67th minute. The Chattanooga, Tenn. native made one save in her collegiate debut.
