MORGANTOWN, W.V. – Donovan Cash and
Jackson Chirello highlighted KSU (5-10, 0-0 CUSA) as both hit solo home runs while West Virginia (13-0, 0-0 BIG12) advanced 16-2 in the Friday afternoon tilt.
How It Happened
Chris Cole began the game with a line single through the left side of the defense. His speed caused a problem for West Virginia as he stole second base but ended up on third via the error from the throw-down. WV got out of the bases-loaded jam with no damage, leaving the game scoreless in the first inning.
West Virginia nabbed the first run of the game with a single through the middle of the infield, scoring a Mountaineer from third base.
In the top of the third inning,
Jackson Chirello left the yard toward right field, launching a solo homer to even the game 1-1.
In the bottom of the third and fourth, West Virginia compiled five runs, taking a 6-1 lead over KSU going into the fifth.
Donovan Cash knocked out his third home run of the season as his solo shot cut the game to four runs in the fifth inning.
The Mountaineers caught fire in the later innings, defeating the Owls 16-2.
Spotlight Performances
- Cash's home run solidified the senior in second place in D-I all-time career home runs (26). He is just four home runs away from holding the record set by Andy Chriscaden (29). He is tied with Ronnie Freeman and Jace Whitmer with 26 career bombs.
- Chirello lifted his first home run in just his fifth at-bat of his season.
- Cole and Aaron Posey showed patience at the plate, taking two walks a piece.
