ATLANTA – Ava Guzowski's four RBI performance wasn't enough for the Owls (14-33) to stop the offensive surge from Georgia Tech (29-20) Wednesday night in Atlanta.
With two outs in the first inning,
Ava Guzowski yanked the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center for a solo bomb. That put up the Owls 1-0 going into the home half of the first. It's the freshman fourth home run of the season and of her career. It was the first lead the Owls had over a power five opponent since #22 South Carolina in the UCF Tournament.
The Yellowjackets stung for two runs in the home half of the first to swing it to a 2-1 advantage for GT.
A solo jack for GT sent them to a 3-1 lead in the second inning. Shortly afterward, freshman
Emma Friedel entered the circle. Two more runs came across to complete the inning leaving with a four run Owl deficit.
In the top of the third inning, Guzowski corkscrewed a ball nearly into the left center gap. A mishandle in center field gave her second base following the single.
Kiera Cooper then spiraled a ball in between the circle and first baseman for an infield single. The toss over to first base went awry and allowed Guzowski to come around to score to make it a 5-2 game.
In the following half inning,
Kiera Cooper laid out for a catch in right field to prevent any batters from reaching base.
Harvey skipped the ball past the third baseman to lead off the fourth inning. The play went under review but was upheld. She then advanced to third base on a wild pitch that found the backstop. Evans and Shumeyko filled the bases up with a walk and hit by pitch, respectively.
Ty Hardeman then poked a ball through the middle for an RBI to bring the game to within two runs.
Madison Miller collected an RBI via the walk to trim to a one run lead for Tech.
The door was then opened for Guzowski to make a dent in the game with the bases juiced. She then pounded a bases clearing double down the left field line to score three runs and give the Owls their second lead of the day. The shortstop lifted the Owls to a 7-5 lead.
It was the third time the Owls have batted around in an inning with the last coming in the first inning versus Bethune-Cookman March 2. The five runs scored in the fifth inning is the highest scoring inning for the Owls since the Bethune-Cookman game as well.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Leah Jannakos entered the game. It signified the third pitcher used for KSU in the game.
The game became tied with a two-run opposite field shot from GT making it 7-7. That caused
Kenley Hilleary to enter the game, the fourth pitcher of the game for KSU.
Georgia Tech began the seventh inning with a double to left field which caused
Melanie Bennett to enter the game. It's the only game this year the Owls have used every listed pitcher.
A three-run blast from Tech ended the game in the seventh inning 10-7.
