KENNESAW, Ga - Kennesaw State (10-25) surrendered both games to Jacksonville (15-17) in Saturday's doubleheader at Bailey Park.
Game One (8-0, L)
Both Kennesaw State and Jacksonville got off to a slow start offensively with neither team able to bring home a run until the third inning where JU scored six runs.
Following the sixth run by JU, freshman
Leah Jannakos was brought in relief and secured the next two outs for the Owls to take them to the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Dolphins tacked on three additional runs to extend their lead 8-0. This score would stand as final as the Owls could not bring in a run in the bottom of the fifth, ending game one.
Game Two (8-7, L)
To start off the game, the Dolphins were able bring home two runs in the top of the first inning.
In the same inning, the Owls matched this off of a double by
Kiera Cooper that scored two runs. With bases loaded and one out,
Reese Evans lined a pitch into shallow right field that brought home a run and gave the Owls their first lead of the series, 3-2.
Melanie Bennett shined in the curcle during this game, striking out two batters in the top of the third inning, one swinging and one looking.
In the fifth inning, the Dolphins scored a single run to the tie the game, 3-3. In the bottom of the fifth,
Kassidy Amerson-Fox hit a ball in the gap between third and second base to bring
Stella Henry home and regain the lead, 4-3.
Following the hit by Amerson-Fox, catcher
Macie Howes sent a two-run home run out of Bailey Park to extend the Owls lead, 6-3.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Dolphins scored three runs to keep themselves in the game. The game would eventually go into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, Jacksonville scored one run to take the lead, 7-6.
To lead off the bottom of the eighth inning,
Ty Hardeman tripled to right field and was eventually brought home following a single by Amerson-Fox, 7-7.
After Jacksonville scored a run to take the lead 8-7 in the top of the 10th inning,
Melanie Bennett was brought back in to the game to pitch relief.
Jacksonville won the game in the tenth inning with a final score of 8-7.
On Deck
The Owls will take on in-state rivals Georgia State in Bailey Park on Wednesday, April 3rd at 6 p.m.
Admission is free to all Kennesaw State softball home games in 2024.
