RICHMOND, Ky. – The slew of home runs the Owls (10-20) racked up wasn't enough to overcome the Colonels (22-4), dropping both games in Saturday's douleheader.
Game One (5-4, L)
The Owls snagged the first lead of the series as
Ava Guzowski homered to dead center to go up 1-0 in the first inning. The run was then answered with an EKU score to tie it 2-2 going into the second inning.
It's Guzowski's third home run, with all three coming in conference play. She has hit all three big flies in the last four games.
In the top of the fourth, The Owls secured yet another lead via the home run ball. Beginning with a Guzowski walk,
Kassidy Amerson-Fox obliterated a ball over the right field fence for a two-run home run. The home run gave Amerson-Fox her third of the season and the Owls a 3-1 lead.
The next pitch,
Kiera Cooper left the yard to center field for another solo shot, securing a 4-1 advantage. It was Cooper's second home run of the year.
It marked the second time this season the Owls have hit back-to-back home runs in a single game. Prior to this season, the latest instance was in 2021 with
Brea Dickey and Lexi Solorzano versus North Alabama.
EKU was able to claw back into it, scoring three runs in the fourth inning and walking it off in the seventh. The Colonels won 5-4 to conclude game one.
It's the first time this season the Owls have homered three times in a single game
Game Two (3-2, L)
It was another active first inning as the Colonels sparked three runs on the back of a two-run home run. Although down early, the Owls would not go down without a fight.
In the third inning,
Madison Miller singled to left center to bring home
Caroline Shumeyko to cutting the deficit to two.
Macie Howes blasted her third home run of the year to center field in the fourth inning. KSU could not secure the win with a 3-2 final.
