KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State's highly touted freshman recruiting class did not disappoint in their collegiate debut, as the top four scorers for the Owls on Tuesday night were all true freshman in a 110-61 victory over Toccoa Falls at the KSU Convocation Center.
STAT OF THE GAME: KSU started three freshmen in the starting lineup in a season opener for the first time in the school's Division I era, and all three shined from the floor. Braedan Lue led all scorers with 22 points, while Jamil Miller added 17 points and Adrian Wooley 14. Ramone Seals meanwhile came off the bench to score 18, giving the freshman quartet a combined 71 points. A fifth freshman, Mekhi Turner, would add four points in the final minutes of the contest.
THE FIRST HALF: The game was never in doubt as the Owls scored the first eight points, and led 29-14 off a Lue layup with 8:21 to play in the half. A 19-7 run near the end of the half put KSU ahead 50-26.
THE SECOND HALF: A 16-3 run to start the second half put the game away for KSU, with Lue making it a 66-31 contest with 15:37 on the clock. The lead grew as high as 49 twice, including at the end thanks to six unanswered points from the Owls to end the contest.
POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH ANTOINE PETTWAY
"I thought we did a pretty good job. The first half we started out a little sloppy, just had to get those first 20 minutes under our belt. But then in the second half we kind of settled in. A major point of emphasis was rebounding, and we outrebounded them by 30 and had 28 offensive rebounds. We're young so we are going to make some mistakes, but they did a great job in only turning it over nine times against 28 mistakes. It gets tougher now, we have a really tough Cal Baptist team on Saturday so we'll try to clean up our mistakes and get ready for Saturday.
NOTES
-Lue's 22 points is the most ever by a KSU freshman in a season opener (Division I era).
-KSU's final point total (110) and rebounds (63) both ranks as the second-most in a game in KSU history (D1 era).
-The Owls shot 48.2% (41-85) for the game, was 10-of-34 from three-point range (29.4%), and struggled at the line, hitting just 18-of-32 for 56.3%.
NEXT TIME OUT: The Owls will paly their first road game of the season as they face Cal Baptist in Riverside, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. (ET) in a game streamed live on ESPN+.
