KENNESAW, Ga. – The Owls came up even with the Florida Gators at home Sunday night thanks to an equalizing goal from senior midfielder
Agata Giani in the second half.
"We had some players had an off night and some who really stepped up and that's awesome," Coach Benji Walton said. "That's what we are trying to accomplish. I'm proud of their fight and hopefully we keep growing from this."
The Owls remain undefeated at home while boosting the record to 1-2-2 while the Gators take their second tie of the year now at 3-0-2.
It was a slow start for both attacks early with only one combined shot from both teams in the first 20 minutes. Owl keeper
Allanah Blye came up with a knockout from a Florida corner with 22 minutes left in the first half. Not long after Blye's heroics, Florida's Megan Hinnenkamp scored at the 23 minute-mark to take the lead.
Early in the second half, the Owls controlled the tempo.
Tianna Rivera nearly tied the game when she headed one a few feet to the side of the post 40 minutes in the second half. She received the feed off the left to right cross from
Anabel Orozco.
Orozco continued her activity with another left-footed cross which resulted in a shot merely inches from the post by
Macie Rainwater at minute 31.
At just underneath 25 minutes left,
Agata Giani scored the first goal of the game for the Owls off the cross from
Aila Swinton assisted by
Macie Rainwater. It was the first goal that the Gators had conceded all season.
This match tallied the first tie ever versus an SEC opponent with the last win versus the SEC coming versus the Georgia Bulldogs, Sept. 9, 2018.
The Owls threatened with 18 minutes left after a
Tianna Rivera shot was swooped up by keeper Alexa Goldberg. That marked one of the last opportunities the Owls had before time expired.
