KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State scored four of the first five goals to take the early momentum, while senior midfielder
Siena Gore finished with five goals to lead the Owls to their first-ever win over a Power Five school in a 14-13 victory over Oregon on Sunday afternoon from Fifth Third Bank Stadium. KSU moved to 1-1 on the season with the win in its home opener, while the Ducks dropped to 1-2.
After being held to just two goals a week ago in the opener, Gore exploded for three goals in the first 22 minutes. She scored her first and second at 12:25 and 4:00 of the first to put KSU ahead 4-1.
The Ducks bounced back, scoring five of the next six goals of the contest. A goal with 9:53 left in the second quarter gave Oregon its first lead of the game at 6-5. Gore quickly shut down any hopes of a run by the visitors as she sparked a 4-0 KSU run to end the half, with three of the goals coming from the Alpharetta, Ga., native.
McKenzie Jackson then opened the second with back-to-back scores, her first two as an Owl, to put KSU up 11-6.
Kennesaw State led 14-9 in the fourth with 10:48 to play off
Chesslyn Lamar's first career hat trick. That was the final score for the Owls though, and they would have to hold off a Duck rally that scored four unanswered, the last at 1:35 to bring Oregon within 14-13. KSU was able to run out the clock however, keeping possession on the Ducks' side of the field and then drawing a foul in the last ten seconds to extend the shot clock and end the game.
QUOTEABLE: "I think we came out hard, we had talked about playing a full 60 minutes coming into today. And we held the lead almost the entire game. Being able to control the tempo was huge for us, and I was really impressed how we did that today."
On knocking off a Power-Five school:
"Getting a win over Oregon, we like to play big teams and we want to win those games. We started the year with Florida, and we could see what we needed to work on for our next game. Beating Oregon is a huge win for us and our program."
On the play of the defense:
"I think one thing we're really excited about this year, is that we have two strong goalies. Both
Julia Weiss and
Errin Crowe did an outstanding job, Errin came off the bench in the third quarter and got saves right away and that really helped out on offense. Both our goalies save percentage were over 50% and we can win a lot of games when we play like that." -
Head Coach Laura Maness
