THE STORYLINEÂ
The Kennesaw State volleyball team's spring season came to a close Friday night as the Owls fell to top-seeded FGCU in the ASUN semifinals 25-15, 25-18, 25-22, finishing the spring slate 11-3 overall.
SCHUNZEL QUOTES
On the match and the spring season…
"I'm really proud of our group. Everybody in the country has been talking about it, but there have been so many challenges since the beginning of the school year and our team stuck together, trained hard and stayed positive and we put together a really nice spring season. Tonight, the opportunities that we had, we weren't able to convert and against a team like that when you get opportunities, and there are not many of them, you better be able to find a way to convert. We didn't take advantage of some of the moments that we had, and the game went as it did. But we had some young kids get in and get some good experience and play well. I thought our seniors played a nice match and I'm just proud of our team."
HOW IT HAPPENED
After trading points early in the first set, the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to lead 12-5.
Emma Schurfranz finally ended FGCU's run with a kill as the two squads proceeded to go point-for-point down the stretch. The Eagles held on to their seven-point lead throughout the set, hitting .258 compared to .032 for KSU. FGCU went on to record five of the final seven points to win the set 25-15.
The Owls bounced back to open the second set with a 4-2 lead thanks to two kills from
Dani Ballou and one from Schurfranz, but FGCU responded with a 5-0 run to pull in front 7-4. KSU eventually cut the lead to one, 9-8, following a kill and an ace from
Lauren Chastang. FGCU went on to extend its lead behind an 8-2 swing to make it 19-12. After FGCU took a 22-13 lead, KSU attempted to mount a late comeback as back-to-back kills from
Chelsey Abel sparked a 5-1 run to make it 23-18. It would be too little too late though as FGCU capitalized on two straight errors to claim the set 25-18.
That late momentum for the Owls carried into the third set as both teams battled for each point. The two squads went point-for-point deep into the set, recording 11 ties and three lead changes. FGCU eventually gained the upper hand as two Owl errors resulted in a 17-15 advantage. The Eagles held on to their slim lead and even extended it to 23-19 following a kill and an ace by FGCU's Erin Shomaker. After the Eagles earned set point, the Owls looked to extend the match fighting off two match points before a service error capped off the set and gave FGCU a 25-22 victory.
