THE STORYLINEÂ
Siena Gore bullied the Gardner-Webb defense scoring seven goals, five in the second half alone, to propel the Kennesaw State women's lacrosse team to a 14-12 victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon for KSU's second straight win to improve to 3-3 on the year.
MANESS QUOTES
On today's win…
"I thought today was a hard-fought win on the road. We had several girls step up to give us the edge. Jaxsyn [Schonewille] and Siena [Gore] were brilliant on the draw circle, defensively
Rachel Price stepped up big, in midfield
Camryn Klaus stepped up and lastly
Errin Crowe subbed in goal in crunch time and helped us seal the win. To Gardner-Webb's credit they battled the whole 60 minutes and were able to keep the game pretty close. Offensively, the Gore sisters had some nice goals and we did pretty well from the eight-meter arc which was an important piece of our success. Defensively, we went in and out of two defenses and we adjusted well and were able to cause several turnovers. I'm proud of the team as they kept great focus even when things didn't always go our way."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls started off hot with sisters Siena and
Marissa Gore each netting a free position goal to put KSU on top 2-0 just three minutes into the game. Gardner-Webb bounced back from the quick start with a 3-0 run to take the lead with 22:54 still to play. The Gore sisters re-took the lead for KSU with back-to-back goals less than 20 seconds apart to make it 4-3 before
Chesslyn Lamar added another goal to cap off a 3-0 run.
Â
After another 3-0 run for GWU, the Owls responded thanks to some stellar play from
Natalie Welch. The sophomore caused a crucial turnover in KSU's offensive third feeding
Jaxsyn Schonewille for the goal before netting one herself less than minute later to put the Owls back on top 7-6.
Â
The Runnin' Bulldogs looked to even the game with a last second push, but
Julia Weiss came up with a big caused turnover to keep KSU in front at the break. Weiss finished the first half with three saves.
Â
Siena Gore kept the momentum rolling in the second half with her third goal of the game to make it 8-6 at the 28:26 mark. The two teams then proceeded to trade goals as
Camryn Klaus recorded her first of the year followed by two more from
Siena Gore to keep the Owls in front 11-9.
Â
Marissa Gore followed suit with KSU's third goal in less than a minute to give her a hat trick and the Owls a 12-9 lead with 15:20 left in the game. Gardner-Webb refused to go away, keeping it close with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to one, 12-11.
Siena Gore maintained the Owls' lead with two more goals sandwiched around a GWU goal to keep KSU ahead 14-12.
Â
Both defenses clamped down in the final 10 minutes as the Owls forced four turnovers while
Errin Crowe logged two huge saves down the stretch to secure the narrow 14-12 victory.
Â
KSU finished the game 8-for-12 on free position shots while going a perfect 15-for-15 on clearance attempts.
