MANESS QUOTE
On the win and standouts on both sides of the field…
"I think the second half is really the brand of lacrosse that we are truly proud of. I think our second half effort is exactly what we need to come out of the gate with from the very first whistle. Offensively, we were super productive scoring 25 goals and having a lot of other players step up and contribute. Camryn Klaus really did a nice job in the midfield off the bench and really sparked us. Jaxsyn Schonewille had a really nice game with three goals and Hannah Barth stepped up and was able to chip in too so I thought that was really good from some of the players who are normally in a support role. Siena Gore had an amazing day with her nine goals and 13 draw controls which is really what we expect and Marissa also had a good day with three goals and an assist so I think they did what they needed to do, but other people around them were starting to come into their own and step up. Defensively, I think we started a little bit slow in the first half. Allowing nine goals was just too many for a half. What I'm proud about with our defense is that we played three different defenses today and so switching in and out of those defenses fluidly really helped us in the second half to create confusion and uncertainty. I think that's how we were able to hold them to four goals in the second half and I think that shows how multi-dimensional our backfield is becoming, when one thing doesn't work we can get into another thing. I'm really proud of our backfield for that. I also think that Julia Weiss had a great day, she was breaking up passes, making plays, saving the ball and being disruptive in the goal cage. All in all, a good effort and I'm glad we finished the game with a lot of momentum that we can carry into our next game against Winthrop."
HOWÂ ITÂ HAPPENEDÂ Â
The Terriers logged the opening goal just over 30 seconds into the match to take the early lead. Kennesaw State responded with a Siena Gore free position goal to equalize the game at the 27:15 mark. Wofford then answered with back-to-back goals before Siena Gore found the back of the net once again to make it 3-2 with 22:14 still to play. Both teams traded goals over the next few minutes as Siena and Marissa Gore each netted a goal to keep KSU within one, 4-3, 10 minutes in.
Wofford then earned its largest lead of the game behind a 3-0 run to make it 8-4 with 8:38 left in the half. Determined to flip the switch, Siena Gore scooped up the ensuing draw control and took it the house to snap the Terrier run. The goal sparked life into the Owls as KSU proceeded to go on a 5-0 run, netting three goals in just over a minute, to take the lead 9-8 at the 1:45 mark. Four Owls scored during the run with Siena Gore netting two goals followed by Jaxsyn Schonewille, Camryn Klaus and Julia Dell'Angelo recording one each. The Terriers managed to knot the game at 9-9 with a goal just 49 seconds before the halftime whistle.
The second half started out in similar fashion as Wofford scored two goals around one from Klaus to pull ahead 11-10. Klaus put KSU on her shoulders in the opening minutes recording back-to-back goals less than 30 seconds apart to put the Owls back on top 12-11 with 25:26 to play. From there it was all KSU as the Owls went off for a 6-1 run featuring four goals from Siena Gore and one each from Hannah Barth and Marissa Gore.
After Wofford pulled one back to make it 18-13 at the 13:51 mark, KSU put the pedal to the metal scoring seven goals in the final 10 minutes for the victory. The Owls outscored the Terriers 16-4 in second half, outshooting Wofford 34-12 in the period. Seven Owls found the back of the net in the second half with Abbey Behn netting her first of the season while Barth logged a career-high two goals.
Jaxsyn Schonewille and Camryn Klaus recorded their first career hat tricks with Klaus finishing the game with five goals and an assist. Â Â
