NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Kennesaw State battled No. 6 Vanderbilt University to a first half draw, but the Southeastern Conference champs pulled away in the second half in a 3-1 decision Thursday.
KSU (2-6-0) completed its non-conference schedule with the match that also marked the third SEC foe of the spring season.
"Today was one of the best brands of soccer we played in my time at KSU. I'm so proud of how we reaised to the occasion against a top-10 opponent," said head coach Benji Walton.
The Owls held the 'Dores (9-4-0) to just one shot on goal in the opening half, and had a look at a shot of their own when Kameron Downs and VU goalkeeper Sarah Fuller raced to a loose ball in the box.
After Vandy totaled nine first half shots, the teams shot an even five times in the latter 45 minutes, but the hosts found more success.
Madi Allen opened the scoring at 65:23, then Raegan Kelley scored just over two minutes later. Vandy's final goal came in rapid fashion, too, on a Haley Hopkins boot. All goals were assisted by Madison Elwell.
Kendall Hart scored for the Owls on her unassisted goal at 82:12 against Sophie Guilmette.
Fuller was credited with the win, while Dylan Pixton had one save in a loss. AJ Needham played the final 14:22 in net for KSU.
"We talk about growing our game and if we can match this performance and cut out some mental mistakes, I'm excited to see how we can finish this journey," said Walton.
KSU returns home to host North Alabama in ASUN Conference play. The fifth all-time meeting is set for 1 p.m. at the KSU Sports Park. Click here for attendance and COVID-19 protocol information.
