SCHUNZEL QUOTES
On the team's all-around performance…
"Our serve, our block and our defense were outstanding. We really controlled UNA throughout the match. And then I was really happy that we inserted a lot of players and a lot of people contributed and did some really nice things. I thought all around we did a lot of really good things as a group."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls came out fired up to open the match racing out to an 8-2 lead. The Lions managed to cut the lead down to three, 10-7, but KSU responded with a 7-1 swing to take a 17-8 lead. KSU pushed its lead to as high as 22-11 holding UNA to a -.077 hitting percentage in the set. The Owls cruised to a 25-16 set victory as
Claire Parsons logged a solo stuff, her third block of the set, to seal the win.
Â
After UNA took a 3-1 lead to open the second set, the Owls buckled down with a 4-0 run to re-take the lead 5-3. The Lions kept it close as a 3-0 run pulled them within one, 9-8, but the Owls were undeterred, ripping off a 6-1 run capped off by a kill from
Emma Schurfranz to lead 15-9. After trading points, KSU earned set point 24-15 behind a 7-2 swing. Parsons capped it off once again with a kill to earn the 25-16 set victory and give KSU a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.
Â
The third set was all Owls as KSU hit .429 in the set compared to -.222 for UNA. The Owls seized control following a 6-0 run capped off with back-to-back kills by
Lanie Vantrease to lead 8-4. Following a service error, KSU would go on to record the next eight straight points featuring two aces from
Karlee Groover as well as Parsons combining for blocks with Vantrease and
Jessie Cohen. The Owls kept their foot on the gas as Vantrease recorded a 3-0 run of her own with a kill and two aces to make it 21-8. Another 3-0 run gave KSU set point, 24-9, before a service error sealed the straight set sweep.
