THE STORYLINE
It was a tale of two halves in the Kennesaw State women's lacrosse 2021 season-opener. After a tough back-and-forth first half saw the Owls in front 4-3, Coastal Carolina battled back with a big second half to down KSU 15-7 Saturday afternoon.
MANESS QUOTES
On the season-opener...
"We played a great first half. I'm proud of how we came into the game with a championship mindset. My freshman goalie
Julia Weiss sparked our backfield right away. Our offensive production wasn't where it needed to be down the stretch. We were at a disadvantage going into our first game after a COVID pause. I think that affected our offensive flow and I am looking forward to regrouping and getting proper preparation. I think that alone will self correct the offensive side."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Marissa Gore kicked the 2021 campaign off right netting the opening goal just 30 seconds in. After a goal from Coastal Carolina tied the game,
Siena Gore answered back just over a minute later to keep KSU in front 2-1. The Chanticleers eventually knotted the game back up, but
Siena Gore responded once again with a goal to make it 3-2 with 20 minutes still to play in the half.
The back-and-forth battle continued as the two teams traded goals with
Marissa Gore netting her second goal to maintain a 4-3 lead at halftime. Freshman
Julia Weiss was a force in the net for the Owls recording eight saves in the first half.
CCU came out firing in the second half with two goals sandwiched around a score by
Chesslyn Lamar to knot the game at 5-5. The Chanticleers' continued to push the tempo netting four straight goals to take a 9-5 lead with 14:30 still to play.
Coastal Carolina pushed its lead to as high as 13-5 before
Marissa Gore finally snapped the drought to record a hat trick.
Siena Gore also logged one more goal in the period, but CCU pulled away outscoring KSU 12-3 in the second half to record the win.
