ABDUR-RAHIM QUOTES
On the vibe in the locker room after the game…
"Without being too cliche, the way these guys have come back and worked everyday this season, it hasn't changed. And I truly believe when they come into the gym, they believe they can win. It's just getting over that hump and breaking through and seeing that hard work pay off. You see that now, that belief grows a little more … Just really happy for our guys, they earned it, they deserve it and I can't be more happy for them."
On what he told the team coming out in the second half…
"We talked about being mature. We've worked scenarios in practice … we call them sustain games and that sustain means that that lead from timeout to timeout either stays the same or we push it. And I thought we did a good job of that the first, the second and the third media timeouts. Now after that we kind of went back-and-forth and got lackadaisical. I called the early timeout because I didn't like our defensive energy and I just had to remind them of what got us that lead. We were just talking about being mature on the offensive end and on the defensive end playing with the same energy and effort and connection we'd been playing with all game."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Kasen Jennings opened the night with his first of four three-pointers in the half on the first possession. After Stetson responded with a 7-0 run, the Owls pulled their way back in front, 10-9, thanks to a 7-1 swing capped off by another triple by Jennings at the 14:25 mark. KSU eventually pulled away with a 10-0 run, featuring back-to-back treys by
Spencer Rodgers and
Chris Youngblood, to take a 20-12 advantage.
KSU pushed its lead to double-figures, 27-15, thanks to a three-pointer from Jennings who recorded a career-high 12 points in the first half alone. The Owls and Hatters traded points in the final minutes as KSU held on to their double-digit advantage to lead 42-24 at halftime. KSU finished the half 6-of-14 from range, committing only one turnover in the period.
The Owls pushed the tempo in the opening minutes of the second period as Rodgers drained four straight three-pointers to give KSU its largest lead of the night, 58-35. The Hatters attempted to cut into the lead with a 9-1 run, but the Owls pushed back with a quick 7-0 swing to maintain its 20-point lead, 66-44.
After holding Stetson at bay, the Hatters made things interesting late with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 10, 71-61. Stetson kept chipping away as another 5-0 run made it 77-71 with 42 seconds left to play, but the Owls would not be denied as Rodgers netted three free throws in the final seconds with a dunk form
Alex Peterson sealing the 83-75 win.
