JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Kennesaw State Owls captured a 1-0 victory against the Jacksonville Dolphins at Southern Oak Stadium Friday night to open the 2021 spring season.
"I'm super proud of the 90-minute fight from the entire team. It was a nasty night playing almost the entire game in a monsoon. With a game like that it is hard to find a rhythm, the ball skips everywhere" said head coach
Benji Walton. "We knew we had to battle it out and find a way, and that's really what happened."
After a quiet first half,
Kameron Downs scored the first and only goal of the match off of a high, left kick at 74:13 for the Owls.
The Owls (1-0-0) had 16 shots with four shots on goal while the Dolphins (0-3) had one shot, which was on goal. Goalkeeper
AJ Needham was victorious in her first career start.
Becky Contreras played 90 minutes, leading the team with five shots and one shot on goal.
Erin Harris had four shots and one shot on goal. She played a total of 84 minutes.
"I'm proud of the character we showed," said Walton. "It's so nice to get a win, especially after such a long break from games."
The Owls remain in the River City to battle the North Florida Ospreys Sunday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m.
