FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Kennesaw State women's soccer team carved out a 1-0 win against the Bellarmine Knights, with Macie Rainwater scorching a goal from 25 yards out to send the Owls to the ASUN Tournament Final.
FINAL SCORE: Kennesaw State - 1 | Bellarmine - 0
KEY PERFORMERS: Macie Rainwater - game-winning goal; Dylan Pixton, Hayley Dekker and Erin Miller - 90 minutes played in clean sheet.
"It's so hard to get to the final," said head coach Benji Walton. "Everyone always says, 'oh, you'll get there next year.' But it's not that easy, especially when you're fighting with 11 other teams to do it. It hasn't been an easy journey at all. Getting to the final for the third year in a row, every year we've made it has been a different mountain for us to climb. Whether it was finding our rhythm or dealing with injuries, this team made it and I'm so proud of them. They're a gritty group and they've earned everything they've achieved."
Very little separated the two sides for a majority of the match, with both teams logging two shots apiece at the end of the first half.
Macie Rainwater had the best chance of the first 45 minutes, attempting a backheel shot off of a cross from the left side.
The ASUN All-Freshman selection could not be kept out however, finding the perfect angle before launching a powerful, right-footed strike into the top-left corner of the Knights' net in the 74th minute. It was the forward's seventh goal of the season and fourth in two games after her Friday-afternoon hat trick.
With their 1-0 win, the Owls advance to the ASUN Tournament Final on Saturday, Nov. 6. With Lipscomb beating Eastern Kentucky 4-0 in the opposite semifinal, the Bisons will host the final at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex in Nashville, Tenn.
