LYNCHBURG, Va. – Kennesaw State volleyball kept its win streak alive Friday night but it was not easy, as the Owls had to rally from a 1-0 deficit to eventually outlast Liberty 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 17-25, 15-11) in ASUN action from Liberty Arena. That moved KSU's win streak to seven games, while the Owls are now tied for second place in the ASUN East Division with North Florida at 9-3.
STAT OF THE GAME: The Owls (15-8) survived 33 attack errors on the night thanks to a strong defensive performance, which included doubling the Lady Flames in team kills 15-7. Jasmine Brown continued her late season surge with a career-high eight blocks, while Claire Parsons added six and Emma Schurfranz had five.
OWL OF THE GAME: Lauren Chastang recorded her 10th double-double of the year thanks to team-highs in kills and digs (18), which were also a season-high for the senior. She added four blocks, one ace and four assists in the win as well.
SET ONE: The first set was tight throughout with a total of 10 ties. The Owls found themselves trailing almost the entire set however, with just a single lead, at 11-10. After it was tied for the final time at 19-19, the Lady Flames reeled off four straight for a 23-19 advantage, and then held off the Owls to claim a two-point win.
SET TWO: Again the set was very close with 10 ties in the first 14 points. A 5-0 run by KSU gave the visitors the momentum however, and three kills in the final four points by the Owls tied the match at 1-1.
SET THREE: Neither team could take control of this set until the very end in what was probably the deciding stretch of the night. The Lady Flames opened up a 21-19 lead, and then saw the Owls take the next six points to steal the set win, as Schurfranz's kill completed the comeback.
SET FOUR: The home team jumped out quickly for an 11-4 lead and the Owls never threaten in the set.
SET FIVE: KSU turned it around in set five, winning seven of the first 10 points for a 7-3 edge. Liberty came no closer than four the rest of the way.
QUOTEABLE: "That was a hard fought win. Really nice game by Liberty tonight as well. We were up and down at times but some of that was due to our opponent. We had a number of players come off the bench tonight and do some great things. I thought our passers were excellent all game, helping steady us when we were struggling in other areas. Overall I'm super proud of the execution and mental fortitude in game five to play lights out in a really tough environment." – KSU head coach Keith Schunzel
NOTES:
- The Owls' seven-game win streak is tied for the 16th-longest in the nation, and is second in the ASUN behind FGCU's current 13-game streak.
- KSU won a record eighth match in the month of October (8-1). The most wins previously in the month had been seven, as the Owls were 7-1 in 2019 in October.
