STATESBORO, Ga. – The Owls surrendered two late home runs in a 7-2 defeat against Georgia Southern in the Wednesday night tilt.
It was a pitcher's duel in Statesboro at the beginning as the Owls had an impressive performance from Josh Coburn on the mound.
The southpaw tossed season-high 5.1 innings of two-run baseball while giving up six hits. The Owls tallied just one hit in the first five innings, but found themselves in scoring position in the sixth inning.
After David Chabut drew a lead-off walk in the top of the sixth frame, he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jake Franklin. After stealing third base, he was left stranded after a pair of Owls were punched out.
Georgia Southern homered in the sixth inning to take the first lead of the ballgame, 2-0.
The Owls positioned themselves well in the seventh inning after Justin Russell singled and Tyler Simon drew a walk. The runners advanced bases after a sacrifice bunt. Russell tapped the pentagon for the Owls first run of the ballgame after a wild pitch from the Eagles' hurler. Kennesaw State tied the game after Simon scored on a ground ball off the bat of A.J. Willoughby.
The Eagles retook the lead in the eighth inning, 5-2, after a three-run homer and tacked on two more to push the advantage at 7-2. The Owls could not rally in the ninth and fell on the road.
