Both pitching staffs worked four scoreless innings to begin the contest at OrthoGeorgia Park on Tuesday evening.
Josh Coburn dealt four frames for the Owls before he surrendered four runs in the fifth inning.Â

He ended his outing with 5.0 innings tossed, five hits yielded and zero earned runs. He also punched out four batters.

The Owls threatened in the third inning when
Tyler Tolve led off with a double to left-center field. He was left there after the Bears retired the ensuing three batters.

Tyler Simon and
Justin Russell put together back-to-back singles in the sixth inning with two outs, but the Owls could not push either across the plate.

Mercer scored three runs in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 7-0 after taking advantage of a Kennesaw State error. With
Monty Horn on the bump for the Owls, each run in the frame was unearned.
