KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women's soccer team was 34 seconds away from a victory and then the unfortunate happened.
 
The Owls (5-3-3, 0-0-1 ASUN) allowed an own goal with under a minute remaining, and after two overtime periods, were forced to settle for a 1-1 tie with USC Upstate in their ASUN Conference opener Friday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
 
OWLS STRIKE LATE
The two teams held each other scoreless for the first 87 minutes before Kennesaw State broke through for a 1-0 lead when junior Carly Pressgrove headed in a goal off a corner kick from Morgan Harrison in the 88th minute. It was Pressgrove's first goal of the season.
 
THE EQUALIZER
USC Upstate (4-5-1, 0-0-1) tallied the equalizer, scoring off a corner kick while taking advantage of some confusion on the part of the Owls who thought a goal kick had been called and weren't set for the corner kick, which resulted in an own goal.

QUOTING THE COACH
'It's a tough game to swallow because I was very pleased with the way the team played. I thought we had plenty of chances as we hit the crossbar twice and their keeper came up big several times," head coach Benji Walton said. "I was disappointed how we gave up the goal. I felt like we deserved a better fate, but that's soccer and we'll have to regroup."
 
WALTON ON THE KSU GOAL
"Morgan had a great ball in and it was a nice finish by Carly," Walton said. "We work on that all the time. We had been battling and new it was going to come, and I thought we had it wrapped up after that. Unfortunately, we didn't finish the game off like we needed to."
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Kennesaw State outshot USC Upstate, 19-7, and held an 8-5 advantage in shots on-goal. Seniors Jessica Sexton and Ashtah Das paced the Owls with four shots apiece, including two on goal.

Kennesaw State continues ASUN Conference play next week when it travels to DeLand, Fla. to visit Stetson on Friday (Sept. 29) beginning at 7 p.m. (ET).
